Just like in any other graveyards in the Philippines, an apartment-style tomb can be rented in Parañaque Catholic Cemetery for a five-year fixed contract which costs Php 8,500.00. This includes the lapida (tombstone), two cemented flower pots, and a cemented face of either Jesus (for deceased makes), Virgin Mary (for deceased females) or of an angel (for deceased children).
This contract can then be renewed every three years for Php 1,350.00. Failure in renewal will result to tomb exhumation where the remains of the deceased are transferred in the butuhan (common ossuary) together with the exhumed others. When this happens, bones of the deceased can never be retrieved individually by their families as remains of various deceased individuals have already been mixed up due to limited space available.
There are currently thousands of bones placed collectively in the butuhan. Unpaid rental dues by the family of the deceased is a common issue; however, cemetery personnel are sometimes forced to empty tombs as relatives of the deceased no longer visit for years.
"It was to make space for new occupants".
Families of the dead may have already moved to further places or may have also passed on, leaving the cemetery notice untouched and the tombs forgotten.
